Methanol  is a light, volatile, colorless, and flammable liquid. While it occurs naturally in small amounts in some fruits and vegetables, industrial methanol is predominantly synthesized from natural gas.

Major Applications:

  1. Chemical Feedstock: Used primarily to produce formaldehyde (for plastics and plywood) and acetic acid (for fibers and paints).

  2. Energy and Fuel: Employed as a clean-burning fuel for racing cars, marine vessels, and as a component in biodiesel production.

  3. Industrial Solvent: Vital for manufacturing pharmaceuticals (e.g., vitamins and hormones), inks, resins, and adhesives.

  4. Automotive Fluids: Commonly used in windshield washer fluid and as an antifreeze to prevent lines from freezing in cold climates.

  5. Ethanol Denaturant: Added to industrial ethanol to make it unfit for human consumption.
